Located just around the corner from the Cinerama Dome, the Cabana Club on Ivar has a really cool “old Hollywood” vibe that I kinda love. There’s a little swimming pool-like water running through the place, bridges to the bar, and crazy cool cabanas everywhere you look. I swear to God, this joint is so retro, you half expect to see Louis B. Mayer boozing it up Errol Flynn in the corner.
Christine and I had been here once before, for the WGA’s post-strike “Contract Celebration Party” in March, but obviously, this party was a lot more fun. And unlike the WGA bash where the bar was only halfway “open”, on Monday night, the free drinks were flowing freely, amigos!
And though most of the food was delicious, I’d have to say the highlights were the “American Mall” cookies and the Ben & Jerry’s booth — there is a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cart prominently featured in the movie — that came stocked with five yummy flavors of ice cream.
There was also a hugely popular Sears Arrive Lounge photo booth near the dance floor (we took two sets of pics) and an area where people could spread out and play MTV’s hit video game “Rock Band” — which is also featured kinda prominently in my movie. I know, I know…product placement much? But, hello, this movie is set in a mall…so, what better place to, um, place some products?
Ooo, speaking of branding. I know they probably do this at all the Hollywood premieres, but another thing I totally loved was the fact that they slapped “The American Mall” logo on EVERYTHING. Napkins, the food trays, cookies, a super cool neon sign over the bar, hell, even the wait staff and bartenders wore “American Mall” t-shirts. It was awesome!
But the highlight of the evening was really just chilling with the cast and crew from the movie. I had met all of the core cast members when I visited the set in Utah back in February, but Christine was meeting them all for the first time and had a blast. Everyone — and I mean everyone — both in front of and behind the camera was crazy nice! Seriously, it was like old home week…
I’m sure you’ll recognize some of the more famous guests at the party — Jai Rodriguez from “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy” told me he loved the movie as did the super cool African-American chick from “High School Musical”, Monique Coleman — but, mark my words, the rest of the “Mall” cast is gonna be huge. And they deserve it, because, in my totally unbiased opinion, they really rocked that mall hard, baby.
So with Christine’s feet ready to fall off — those heels were high, yo! — we stumbled back to our car just before midnight and hurried home to open our gift bags! Sadly, no “Rock Band”, but we did get some cool guitar string bracelets like the one the Ally character wears in the movie, “American Mall” t-shirts, stickers, a CD of the soundtrack and loads of Clean and Clear products…so, hey, not a bad way to end the night.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to rinse off my new deep-cleansing acne mask and go to bed. Que viva la Mall!

OMG!!!! I could not stop smiling the entire time I was reading about your Red Carpet experience. It goes without saying that I am so proud of you that I could burst, but seeing those photos was super, super cool. And Christine’s shoes are to die for!!!! Talk about the ultimate designer “Ruby Slippers”, dang! You both looked awesome and with those Clean & Clear treats you can only get better & better (ha! ha!). This will surely be a memory you’ll have for a lifetime. Thanks for sharing! Love you guys!
You looked like you had a terrific time – I’m so jealous! I had to work and I couldn’t make the premiere at Sears HQ, here in Illinois.
Thanks for taking the pictures and detailing your awesome night.

I wish I had the soundtrack! I have the singles and they are awesome! Wanna send a DL link to me? Haha! Looks like y’all had a great time. Can’t wait for the movie.
Sorry Jacob…you’ll have to wait till the 12th to get your copy of the “American Mall” soundtrack. 😦
But if it makes you feel any better, you can pre-order it on iTunes right now and then have it ready to download at 12:01am on the 12th. I guess it’s not that much faster than buying at it Target or something the next day, but iTunes does have a deal where you you also get two music videos and a behind-the-scenes clip segment as well…so, it’s kind of a steal for only $9.99! Check it out!
Also, love to hear what you think of the movie. Make sure and hit me back after you’ve seen it!
Looks so fun. How I wish I was there!
The cast members totally look super duper nice (I especially like the pic with Neil Haskell, from my favorite TV show ever, So You Think You Can Dance).
BTW, the alt tags on your pics don’t seem to be working. It used to be when I moused over them I would see the caption. But it hasn’t been doing it in a while.
I know, the alt tags have been all weird lately. WordPress did introduce a caption option recently, but I think it’s really ugly looking, so I’ve opted out of using it…I’ll try exploring the issue some more…
Yeah, everybody in the cast is really cool in person, and Neil is awesome. He’s also hilarious in the movie!
Great photos , looks like you were having a wonderful time. Congratulations once again. You are the MAN!
I loooved the movie! It was, in my own opinion, a mixed version of “Camp Rock” and “HSM” at a mall. That’s a good thing, though. The only song I think had bad vocals was Autumn’s “The New You”. I liked the rest of the songs and I felt there could’ve been more songs!! This movie left me thinking… sequel? 😉 I felt that the opening number “Every ten Seconds” was the movie’s version of “Greased Lightning”. It was all set up like it and everything which was really cool! The soundtrack cover also reminds me of “Grease” when I see Ally and Joey on the top. I am going to the store tomorrow to buy some guitar strings to make me one of them bracelets! That’s a good idea. I never knew until recently that it had been a fad. I am probably gonna wait and buy the hard-copy soundtrack because I like the CD and if my computer were to ever crash ::God forbid:: then I have a back-up CD of it. 😉 I also am intersted in seeing if the lyrics are in the booklet that comes with the CD. Wanna be a pal and send it to me as a temporary placeholder? I’ll do literally anything!! haha. The songs are great and I love how they are played out on screen. My favorite songs are “Survivor”, “A Little Bit of Heart Somewhere”, “Sorry’s Not Enough”… basically all of the songs. lol. This was great and I hope there is a sequel planned! 😀
Just saw a full-page ad in the newest US Weekly (how embarrassing)… so fun to see your name in print!
Thanks for the heads-up, Melissa!
I totally geeked out and took a picture of the US Weekly ad in Costco tonight. I know I could have just bought the magazine like a normal person and torn the page out myself, but something about snapping a pic of it in my double wide Costco cart in the candy aisle just seemed much more fun! 🙂
Melissa: Ain’t no shame in your US Weekly reading game! Thanks for letting me know – I picked up my own copy (as opposed to taking a picture of it!) at Nob Hill yesterday.
Tom…er…Tomas: Does that mean from now on I will be required to officially call you “Tomas” instead of “Tom”, now that you are all famous and such? Hmmm…that will take some practice after 20 years… 🙂
Actually, Ginger…I’d prefer if you called me Mr. Romero from here on out. Ha! 🙂
Ginger: I can’t believe I never run into you! You know, I’m in the ‘ville de Watson these days… and I know someone you know: Logan Herkomer.
Tom/Tomas/Mr. Romero/Whatever: I’m talking up The American Mall and have a couple people asking what age group it’s geared toward… I know it’s kind of for the tween market. Would it be okay for grade school kids, do you think?
Totally! There are a couple of things that are a bit racy, but most of those jokes would go over kid’s heads anyway.
Thanks also for being my “Mall” PR Rep in Santa Cruz and the ‘Ville! 😉
You know it! Now seriously, press releases for the Sentinel, the Merc, and the Register-Pajaronian? Local boy makes good, dude!
Woohoo!!! I just saw the ad for The American Mall for the first time during the So You Think You Can Dance finale. And to think I used to brag about meeting Samuel L. Jackson…
Yeah, I saw it on SYTYCD too as I was skipping over commercials. But I backed up to watch that one!
